At age 12, Dr. Linda Stillman visited the United Nations and Radio City and knew she would become a diplomat or dancer. How perfect that in her decades of work with many countries and cultures she would ultimately practice the dance of diplomacy and become the creator and chair of Sofia 2012: Women and Wisdom, a major world conference involving men, women and young people in Sofia, Bulgaria next year. Dr. Stillman has participated in international diplomacy serving in several countries and cultures for 20 years, is a representative to the UN for the world's largest women's professional organization for 8 years, and is a professor of Culture, Communication Styles and Strategies, Human Relationships, and the World. Our first, in what will hopefully be a series of interviews, will cover the upcoming 53rd CSW as well as Sofia 2010.

Song is part of the alchemical process that shifts and lifts the spirit. The groups represented on this Saturday's Wake Up & Live do just that. The Holiday Belles, a local a cappella group fourteen women strong are grandmothers and moms, doctors, educators and more, all with a love of song. They're singing this holiday season to benefit Magdalene and Thistle Farms, a residential program and its nonprofit business for women who have survived lives of violence, addiction and prostitution. Donations collected throughout the season will go to Magdalene. What motivates us to care about those in other lands? What prompts some people to actualize compassion through travel, long-distance adoptions and creative pursuits such as film?

We'll talk with four people about their pursuits in Kenya and Iraq. At 8:00 CST, local women Charmaine Jamieson and Mounu Sharon Riddell join us. We'll learn about Mounu's unfolding relationship with Kennedy, the young college student she now assists in Kenya followed learning how Charmaine Jameison's voluntering to teach English to new Kurdish residents has resulted in her traveling three times to Iraq, recently to India and now to Kenya. Charmaine will talk about her upcoming trip departing Sunday. Her present passion is creating a model home for widows and orphans that could be replicated in countries. These words are from the poem "Hope" by former Nashvillian, Beth Smith, now a Berkley, California social worker and writer. Beth joins us this Saturday from California to talk about writing, it's role in waking up and in particular about her journey to "Hope."

We'll also be joined by Anne Paris, psychotherapist and author of "Standing at the Water's Edge" her recent book about immersing oneself creatively. Anne founded the Cincinnati Center for Self Psychology. We'll talk with her about how living creatively allows us to live more deeply as well as be more connected with ourselves and others.

Wherever there's a need she goes to work connecting resources with people. More recently she just returned from Hyderabad, India a city of ten million people where poverty is overwhelming. Charmaine's present passion is to find support for a multi-purpose building there to house widows and orphans. Charmaine's aware of the trafficing of children and hopes this might also prevent children from being sold into slavery. She imagines this model being utilized throughout India, Africa, Asia wherever there's need for care for those so often considered outcasts. It's Spring and the grass is growing but something's happening at the grass roots level in America. Join us as we talk with Ellyn Crutcher and Jeffrey Scott about their experiences on the ground with US Senate hopeful Greg Fischer in KY and Presidential candidate Barack Obama respectively. Although Ellyn and Jeffrey support their respective candidates, we'll be talking with them about aspects of the New Story in America which they're witness to while campaiging.

Louisville, KY resident Ellyn Crutcher our first hour guest is passionate abou the arts, especially film, interfaith work, the environment and community building. She's also passionate about working to bring change to the status quo in Washington. Ellyn will share with us what she's witnessing as the New Story unfolds on the ground in KY.

In our 9:00 hour (CST), New Mexico resident Jeffrey Scott will talk with us from Portland, Oregon where he's part of the Obama campaign. Jeffrey got my attention recently in the e-zine "The Social Artist Companion" after arriving in Austin, TX when he wrote: "Taking in the almost overwhelming excitement and power of it all, I am possessed of the certain knowledge that I have entered a portal of transition time, a deep ever deepening shift in the collective paradigm of how we humans create together our civic life - what we call our politics and governance. I have just dived into the immense powerful currents of a deep running fast moving river. Here I am now at this time at this momentous time entering into and flowing with its currents. A participant and actor in this great shift."

Jeffrey, a writer and public educator is interesting in the relationship between healing social wounds and spiritual renewal. His journey has involved multicultural teaching in diverse universities and social acitivism in local communities. His recent writings re-imagine the birth of the civil rights movement and Martin Luther King's spiritual stuggles and explores the significance of the Barack Obama campaign as grassroots social healing. Jeffrey will talk with us about what he's experiencing as he's been on the ground in Texas, Mississppi and Oregon working on the Obama campaign.

Musician, songwriter Ross Falzone (www.rossfalzone.com) joins us in the studio in our first hour during which we'll try to determine whether Ross is an activist trapped in a musician's body or a musician trapped in an activist's body. To observors, Ross appears to have made creative peace with this dynamic tension as evidenced in his recent CD "Life Here on Earth" as well as his prior one "Radical Heart." Ross has gotten airplay on four continents and has been compared to Bob Dylan, Tom Petty, John Hiatt, Bruch Srpingsteen and others. Ross puts his money where his mouth is; this former army reservist, firefighter and homeless shelter worker has directed all CD proceeds to to, not for profit Youth Empowerment Programs. Ross will also talk about upcoming events in relation to Young Voices of Nashville, the program he developed with WRFN teaching high school teens about broadcasting.

Our guest at 9:00 Central time, Matthew Gilbert has many roles at Petaluma, California's Institute of Noetic Sciences (www.ions.org). Matthew is the Director of Communications as well as editor-in-chief of IONS quarterly magazine "Shift: At the Frontiers of Consciousness. He's authored two books as well as being featured in the anthology, "Einstein's Business: Engaging Soul, Imagination and Excellence in the Workplace" and was the statewide organizer of Green Party USA - Colorado.

IONS in it's 25th year was formed by Apollo 14 astronaut and scientist Edgar Mitchell upon returning from the moon in 1971. Dr. Mitchell was inspired by a personal epiphany as he viewed our beautiful Earth from outer space and IONS resulted. IONS has investigated the nature of consciousness through scientific research working with frontier researchers around the world. Wake Up & Live - Our Third Anniversary --- 8-10 Central Sat. Mornings

It's been three years since the rain-soaked weekend in early April 2005 when over one hundred folks from around the world (yes, Japan and Canada) joined us to raise the tower for Radio Free Nashville( photos at www.radiofreenashville.org) . Seeds have grown from those rains. "Wake Up & Live" will host four prior guests, seeds of the shift in relation to the New Story, to celebrate our three years in Nashville.

Just after 8:00 Central time I'll speak with Bernie Ellis with Gathering to Save our Democracy (www.votesafetn.org) about events unfolding to bring about verifiable voting. Bernie spearheaded the National Conference in Nashville after the questionable election results two elections ago and has continued to be active in this area. At 8:30 Dorie Bolze, the Executive Director of the Harpeth River Watershed Association (www.harpethriver.org) will join me to cover what's new along the Harpeth River including new kayaking ramps in the future.

At 9:00 Central time, we'll get a laugh out of Susan & Luther Ludwig of Laughter Yoga (www.backintouchwellness.com) . Literally, we'll join one of their laughter groups for some laughs and find out how many groups have sprouted since we spoke a few months ago. They'll be followed around 9:30 by Ellie Morse, the Dickson High senior who started a Schools 4 Schools program at her school to raise money for Uganda student (www.invisiblechildren.com )

It's almost Christmas and Wake Up and Live celebrates this week with Bongo Boy and Tony providing some live in studio music in the first hour.

At the top of our second hour, we've the opportunity and honor of talking with Jean Houston, renowned author, scholar, philosopher and teacher. A founder of the Human Potential Movement, Jean's path has intersected with people from Joseph Campbell to Margaret Meade and even a year (unknowingly)with Teilhard de Chardin at the age of 13 in New York City.

Jean has authored over twenty books her two latest being "A Mythic Life" and "Mystical Dogs." Recently in a week's span, she addressed the Festival of Faiths conference in Louisville; the Spirituality and Children conference in Chattanooga and the Annual Theosophical conference in Atlanta. Next year will be the 25th year of Jean's facilitating Mystery Schools with two continuing programs outside NYC and another at IONS in Petaluma. In addition, Jean is a United Nations consultant and directs Social Artistry in Ashland, Oregon.

As Jean is fond of saying, "We're so much more than dreary little egos dragging around bags of encapsulated skin. " Join us as we get Jean's perspective on these times in which we're living and how we can engage our lives personally and nationally on a mythic level.

Around 9:30 I will talk with Charles Sumner, President Emeritus of the Nashville chapter of Americans United for Separation of Church and State. I will ask Charles, one of my personal role models, about Willard Romney's Speech yesterday. Did Mitt say what I think he did? Charles will shed some light on the speech plus perhaps educate us on where the constitution really stands on the separation of church and state issue.

December 1st is World Aids day so we thought it fitting to dedicate this week's show to those affected in particular in Africa and those here at home who feel called to make a difference. In our first hour we'll talk with Deborah Plummer about Give a Jump Start, a non-profit, non-denominational group assisting women and children in Africa. As the name of this group suggests, their goal is to give women just that, a jump start, in helping them form their own businesses. This week we welcome Dick Dalton to Wake Up & Live. Dick was a non-denominational Christian minister from 1975 to 2000, has taught personal and community health classes at the college level since 1978 and has expanded his consciousness in recent years through reading, participating in a New Warrior Training Adventure weekend, attending several Jean Houston mystery schools and being an attendee, intern and mentor in three Social Artistry leadership training intensives in Ashland, OR. Last January he did Al Gore’s Climate Change Messenger training in Nashville. His recent presentation at Westminster College in Fulton, MO was titled: The Coming Confluences: Meme Wars.

Join us Saturday when we talk with Anjela Dale from Allentown, PA. Anjela, the mother of three and a new grandmother, is a graphic designer with a passion for color. We'll hear about Anjela's training and work with the Pachamama Alliance, a non-profit organization addressing possibly the greatest challenge of our time: changing the "dream" of our modern industrial culture so we're don't continue to mindlessly consume the Earth, its resources and its people.

Pachamama is used to reference "Mother Earth" and the "Spirit of the Universe" in the Quechoa language of the Ecuador highlands. The Alliance has successfully worked with several tribes in the Amazon basin of Ecuador and specifically the Achuar a tribe which until 12 years ago had little contact with the Western world. The elders of the Achuar say it's imperative that we "change the dream." The present yet outmoded dream based in domination of the Earth's resources results in endless economic growth regardless of the consequences. As someone recently said at the US Social Forum in Atlanta, "It is as if we are sleepwalking toward oblivion."

The Pachamama Alliance doesn't lay blame at the feet of Big Business, the military-industrail complex, or even those who for personal profit seek to clearcut forests and overfish our oceans. The problem is an outmoded worldview -- a way of seeing the world in which such unthinkable acts appear reasonable, sensible and intelligent.

This organization provides many various opportunities for those of us who love our environment and want to "give back" by volunteering.

Cecily Friday will be with us in the last half hour and we will discuss the current administration's use of Presidential signing statements. Do these signing statements violate the constitution and make George Bush "above the law?" Or is the President within his rights to decide if he has to follow the law in a time of war?

Did you know since 1990 more than 7,000 NGO's have been formed to focus on environmental and social issues? "What's an NGO?" you ask. Join me, Dawn, while the guys are away Saturday as I talk with Dr. Anele Heiges the United Nations Director of NGO Leadership. An NGO is a non-government organization. We are each and every one a walking, talking NGO. I first met Anele, a Dominican Sister who's the epitome of energy and compassion, last summer in Social Artistry. She stood before us and proclaimed that she not only worked for the UN but wanted to address sex trafficking of children and youth especially in Russia. I felt compelled to run up to her after the introduction and say I wanted to spend time with her. I promptly avoided her the remainder of the week. Now having had the opportunity to continue to spend time this year with Anele I realize why I felt compelled to know more yet ran initially. Anele turns words into works. She walks her talk and although she may not have all the answers she is asking the hard questions and doing so with vim and vigor. Anele is heart, mind and soul. This week Tony has invited Thurston Moore for an interview. Moore, who along with his late wife Georgianna (1927-2001), founded the non-profit performing arts organization Tennessee Players, Inc. http://tennesseeplayers.org/

Under Georgianna's theatrical direction the company presented productions throughout Middle Tennessee and neighboring states, including memorable presentations for Nashville's Two River Mansion's "Christmas Open House," where Georgianna's original Civil War Drama, Willie's Comin' Home, premiered. Dr. Goodheart's Medicine Show was presented at the Nashville Convention Center and the creativity and talents of Tennessee Players were vividly showcased in 1988 when they presented An Evening of Entertainment to aid Nashville's PBS station's membership drive, featuring 29 performers in 24 theatrical skits: "To give or not to give. "For several years Tennessee Players sponsored weekend bus tours to Outdoor Dramas with on-board and on-location entertainment. Their weekly radio program, The Theatre Scene, hosted by Georgianna, ran for more than three years and their acclaimed programs are in the archives of the Rodgers and Hammerstein Foundation and the Museum of Television and Radio in New York City. In 1993 Thurston's original drama, Lincoln and the Civil War, with Georgianna portraying Mary Todd Lincoln, premiered at the Tennessee Performing arts Center. Words of Albert Schweitzer and the Music of Bach premiered in 1995 and in l996 Lincoln and the Fisk Jubilee Singers was presented with the world-famous singers at Fisk University, another Thurston Moore original production. It was in 1958 when Thurston saw the Oscar-winning film for "best documentary," Albert Schweitzer, and became deeply influenced by Dr. Schweitzer's life and philosophy of Reverence for Life. Thurston's life's work is keeping Schweitzer's words and spirit alive, and one of his proudest accomplishments was his association with Norman Cousins for the book, The Words of Albert Schweitzer. In 2000 Thurston produced Symposium 2000 - World Peace through Reverence for Life, celebrating the 125th birthday of Schweitzer's birth and the 250th anniversary of Bach's death. That 16-day event in Nashville was sponsored by Vanderbilt University. Thurston first thought of a World Peace 2000 event back in 1987 with encouragement from Norman Cousins. Georgianna and Thurston have worked in theatre in Kentucky (where they were born), Colorado, Connecticut, and New York City, before moving to Nashville in 1983. In Connecticut, Georgianna was the director for three seasons of the Children's Theatre Wing of the famed New Canaan Town Players. Memorable productions she directed for Tennessee Players, and produced by Thurston, include Harvey, Death Takes a Holiday, and You Can't Take It With You.
Georgianna's personal fulfillment was "encouraging community theatres and nurturing the growth of new talent." Actor Tom Dolan wrote after her death, "What she taught me was to look from within and pull life's richness out. She always saw beyond the obvious and into the soul of what could be. Her goal was simply the enjoyment and betterment of mankind. Her energy, excitement and caring always recharged your soul. "Tennessee Players' motto is: "To create something beautiful for somebody else."

In addition, Dawn will interview Vanderbilt University student Jennifer Hirsch. Jennifer recently participated in the Freedom Ride re-enactment.

Dawn will also check in briefly with a group of women friends who are at the UN for 10 days petitioning the UN for a Dept to represent women.

This week we once again have Pam Davee, Development Director/Policy Specialist, of the Harpeth River Watershed Association discussing the current problem facing Franklin residents that live in the areas of Liberty Creek, Lancaster Drive and downtown Franklin. Several individuals reported smelling a strong odor similar to "cat urine" in various locales on and near the Harpeth River. In December, the City of Franklin Water Department took some samples from nearby Liberty Creek that showed a mixture of chemicals, primarily acetone and toluene, were present in the water and in the air above the Creek. Pam will discuss what actions are being taken to address this environmental issue.

This week we hit the road.....well sort of. The regulars will all be present but we will have live interviews from Eric Schechter, who will call us from a van heading to Washington DC for the March on Washington to protest the Iraq War. Then we will have Mark Dalhouse, Director of the Office of Active Citizenship and Service at Vanderbilt, who is part of the reenactment of the famous Freedom Rides give us a call from one of four buses heading to Birmingham.

This week Wake Up & Live welcomes Eric Schechter to our show. Eric is an associate professor of mathematics at Vanderbilt University. Eric was among the "great sleeping masses" of our country -- powerless, confused, and uninvolved about politics until April 2006 when he "woke up". As the situation of our country continued to deteriorate, he felt an increasing need to get involved; and after reading some of George Lakoff's writings he began to feel less confused. He has become active in a few local political organizations, and is the editor of some of their web pages. The work he is proudest of is the Middle Tennessee Progressives Calendar, which attempts to list all the meetings, rallies, and other events going on in the local progressive community. http://plus.calendars.net/midtnprogressive

He says the goal of the calendar is "to bring progressives together." Eric is concerned with many issues, particularly the war and global warming. He believes that mass murder is being committed in our name and that our ecosystem is barreling toward destruction, both for no reason other than the greed of a few powerful people. Lately Eric has realized that all the other issues are subordinate to the issue of media reform, because the public can't be convinced of anything if they never hear the complete story which isn't being told by the main stream media.

This week we welcome back Larry DeRousse to the show. LD was a long time Moderate Republican who voted for George Bush in 2000 but was so appalled by the Iraq war and the attitude of President Bush that he voted for John Kerry in 2004. LD will discuss why he and other Republicans and former Republicans are fed up with the party, and what it would take for those like him to return to the GOP.

The Wake-Up & Live family hopes everyone had a pleasent Winter Solstice, as our Sun reached the point farthest south of the equator on December 22nd.

Hopefully the diverse societies and cultures of our species can learn to live in harmony and balance with Mother Earth and the amazing diversity of lifeforms on this planet that all life must share. Perhaps in the not so distant future we will better understand how human activites effect and interact with the environment from both a global and personal perspective. From that common understanding of scientific evidence perhaps a world wide effort can be mounted to make the necessary adjustments required to protect this place called Earth.

This week Wake Up & Live has an interview DeAnna Elliott. She is a graduate of the University of Northern Colorado with a B.A. in education and many years of teaching experience both here and in third world countries. Looking for a deeper way to assist people in 1980 she attended The Boulder School of Massage Therapy and began an 18 year professional practice in that art. In addition she became trained in infant massage and soon became an instructor trainer with the International Association of Infant Massage. After 22 years as a trainer with IAIM and experience working with thousands of infants and their families, she founded the non-profit Foundation of Global Unity.

DeAnna is the producer of Cellular Echoes. http://www.foundationofglobalunity.org/index.html This film is an exploration of imprinting as it occurs in animals and humans in the first six stages of development: pre-conception, conception, gestation, birth and the first 24 hours after birth and into the early years.
